The world I had known for so many years, transformed into a canvas of understanding and self expression 7 years ago when
I purchased my first camera and a roll of black and white film. The years since have been a journey of discovery, of learning
that I see the world in varying shades of blacks and grays, thru the intricate play of light and shadow, and in the small
wonders of intimate landscapes. Shape, form, texture, line...these simple elements, alone or combined, create elegant beauty
wherever I see them. I am drawn to the abstract textures in rock rather than the entire rock formation, to the ray of light
illuminating a pipe in an abandoned building, rather than the building as a whole, to the sensual curve of a heating duct
bolted to an old brick wall, not the wall itself, and to the smallest grave, hidden beneath a beach tree, not the entire cemetery.
In the simplicity of such landscapes I find beauty, peace and quiet joy.
It is important to me that I am following the tradition of the old masters, learning the process and perfecting the
craft. For this reason, I use a traditional chemical darkroom to create the final images I have captured on film. I am still
enamored of the entire process, conception to birth...seeing the image thru the viewfinder and its eventual emergence in the
developing tray. For me, this is the magic of photography...capturing a moment in time, an emotion, a ray of light, a dream,
and through a slow meticulous process, placing that moment on paper, for all to see and enjoy.
Beyond the rules and techniques of photography exists a world of metaphor, design, abstraction and beauty, of simple
elegance. These things consume and define who I am today. Wife and mother, my life is now further enhanced and broadened by
this chosen endeavor. I seek out from the natural and manmade world that which the poet describes with words, the painter
with the brush.
